1) Virtual labs - i-biology

Curriculum states one of the main goals is to “Developing a deeper understanding of the big ideas requires students to understand basic concepts, develop inquiry and problem-solving skills, and connect these concepts and skills to the world beyond the classroom”. Using virtual labs will help cover one of the overall expectations: A1. “demonstrate scientific investigation skills (related to both inquiry and research) in the four areas of skills (initiating and planning, performing and recording, analysing and interpreting, and communicating)”. 2) Cells Alive - Interactive models http://www.cellsalive.com/ Provides animated and real-life simulations on various biology topics - interactive cell models, cell cycle, animal and plant cell structures and functions, DNA replication, mitosis, meiosis, microbes, immune response. 3) Gizmos - Explore Learning http://www.explorelearning.com/ Provides many simulations available for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics that allow students to explore outcomes of experiments that would be difficult or time-limited in class. Just put the verb into the search window and the site will give you all the different tenses of that verb. Good for studying, too. www.bonpatron.com - a program to use as you write. It will tell you what you have done wrong so that you can correct and learn from your experience. http://www.quia.com/shared/french/ - There is a huge range of language activities available to help you practise different concepts. You may work independently, or sign in with your user name and password into our class site to see activities specifically chosen for the class. http://www.wordreference.com - good translation and dictionary site www.fslhomeworktoolbox.ca - Lots of good information on general grammar, as well as excellent everyday vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. Several pages have audio for prononciation practice. This particular page allows you to choose the language of instruction and learn a number of basic things such as greetings, etc. Definitely worth exploring. http://www.radio-canada.ca/audio-video/ - This page of the site will give you newscasts in French to help you practise listening skills. Teachers and students can use this for digital storytelling, make your story come alive. Break down lessons and keep students engaged while they learn with storyboards!
2) Kahoots : https://getkahoot.com/ Great interactive, online, game-based learning. I used this extensively in practicum for diagnostic and consolidation assessment, and students absolutely adored it! Teachers make an account (it's free) at https://getkahoot.com/ (instructions provided) Then you can choose to make quizzes, surveys or discussion. Very user-friendly and teachers can adjust times, add pictures, music is provided. Then students login on to kahoot.it with their phone or lap top, enter a game pin from the quiz, their name and then the quiz starts. 3) Gizmos : http://www.explorelearning.com/ Online simulations, most school boards have this tool for use. Teachers can browse for their topic and grade and includes worksheets for students set up as an inquiry based experiment. I used Gizmos for my grade 9 Ecology unit, in which students investigated the food chain and experimented with the numbers of species in each tropic level, and what happened if a species was sick. It provided data analysis and real life applications, directly linked to the Ontario curriculum. Gizmos is great for Math and Science. 4) Quia : http://www.quia.com/ online activities/games (and printables ) for French, English and international languages. Includes Jeopardy, crosswords, matching, flashcards, battleship and a variety of different games to review grammar concepts. I used it for my French classes, and it was an amazing tool, you can put it on your website and students can use it at their leisure. 5) Prezi : https://prezi.com/ PowToons : http://www.powtoon.com/ Great presentation software that is visually appealing, can be personalized, and includes pop up animations. Takes some time to prepare but students enjoy it as it is a change from regular powerpoint. |
